Make Radio

Introduction

The workshop includes an hands-on experience employing GNU/Linux for digital radio making and a short theoretical overview on the significance of this media: from Orson Welles' radio-transmission "War of the Worlds" (1938) to contemporary Tetsuo Kogawa's "Micro Radio Manifesto" for the distributed media of the new millennium.

The workshop is held by Cecile Landman and Jaromil Rojo for classes of 10-20 people, the language of the workshop can be English, Italian and Dutch.

Software

We run free software workshops to introduce participants to the use of a 100% free GNU/Linux operating system for media production and artistic creativity.

Each participant receives a dyne:bolic CD with all necessary software, free to be used and redistributed (GNU GPL license). The notions acquired will not make it necessary to buy any commercial software, the students will be free to produce and distribute their own creations without any third-party dependence.

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for various operating systems.

MuSE provides the free software community with a user friendly but powerful tool for network audio streaming, making life easier for independent free speech online radios.

Icecast is free server software for streaming multimedia.

dyne:bolic GNU/Linux is an operating system for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream.
